Introduction

Broadly following the themes from previous years, the 1999 Durex Global Sex Survey falls loosely into the following categories:

Sexual Education – covering the quality and timing of global sex education. How do young adults rate sex education and what does it tell us about the quality of the information on offer? Where do they receive information and where would they prefer to receive it? Is education keeping pace with changes in young people』s sexual attitudes and behaviour? And is what they learn what they really need to know?

Sexual Initiation – a detailed look at young adult』s expectations of sex and their first sexual experiences. Was first sex good, bad or indifferent? Do the circumstances of first sex shape attitudes and behaviour later on? And for those who haven』t yet had sex, what holds them back?

Sexual Lifestyle a wider perspective on the sexual habits and views of today』s youth. What is their attitude towards contraception? Has this AIDS aware generation learned from the past? And are young women today taking a more active role when it comes to sex?

Methodology – A New Approach for 『99

A global total of 4,200 young adults aged between 16 and 21 years were surveyed, split equally between men and women. The survey was carried out using self-completion questionnaires to minimize embarrassment and promote honest responses. Participating countries were:

Canada

Czech Republic

France

Germany

Greece

Italy

Mexico

Poland

Singapore

Spain

Taiwan

Thailand

UK

USA

As well as providing data for the 16 – 21 year old group as a whole, the 1999 Durex Global Sex Survey splits responses by individual year groups (16 year olds, 17 year olds, etc) giving a derailed picture of how behaviour differs and changes within each age bracket. Previous Durex Global Sex Surveys have also addressed young people but not in the detail or with the statistical impact of this year』s survey.

The 1999 Durex Global Sex Survey also includes a representative sample of non-sexually active individuals, another change from previous surveys, to allow comparisons between sexually active and non-sexually active young adults. This is especially important when over one third of the global sample in 1999 are still virgins and virginity versus having sex is a hot topic for debate.

First time sex – was that it?

Globally, almost three in ten (29%) sexually active young people were disappointed by first sex although 17% found it much better than expected. Singapore has the highest percentage of people saying first sex was much better than expected (33%), compared to the Czech Republic where only 6% thought so.

Other countries who score highly on much better than expected first sex, include Mexico (26%) and Poland (24%).

The French top the league of sub-standard first time sex with 40% saying it was more disappointing than expected and only 11% saying it was much better. This provides an interesting contrast with previous surveys, which have rated the French as the most romantic nation and the best lovers. Perhaps they just have a lot to love up to!

Other countries destined for first-time disappointment are Canada (37%), USA (35%), the UK (33%) and Taiwan (33%).

Women are much more likely than men to find the first sex experience disappointing. On a global scale, nearly four in ten (39%) young females said first sex was a let-down, compared to 22% of the men surveyed. Only 12% of women said it was much better than they』d hoped, compared to 21% of men.
