Introduction to Video Conferencing in the Classroom - by Jeff Roberts

Traditional teaching methods are being enhanced greatly as technology moves us forward. In general, people are receiving higher degrees than in the past. There are many reasons for the increase in higher-level degrees. Just a few of these reasons include 1) advancement in their career, 2) change of career, 3) self-improvement, and 4) increased availability of classes. Item 4 is where technology has made the largest impact. What better way to bring two or more classrooms together than with Video Conferencing technology? One major advantage of Video Conferencing is the ability to have live interaction between a teacher in one location and several classes across the country.
There are three basic forms of Video Conferencing: One-Way, Two-Way and Multi-Way Video.

One-Way Conferencing
In One-Way Conferencing, audio and video is sent via satellite transmission. Satellite transmission is necessary when programming is sent to multiple locations across a wide geographic area. Multiple sites can see the instructor, but the instructor can only see students present at his or her location. In e-education this method can be used to bring guest speakers to the classroom that may never be able to attend because of time or cost.

Two-Way and Multi-Way Conferencing
This may also be referred to as Interactive TV. Two-Way and Multi-Way Conferencing allow the sender and receiver to see, hear and interact with each other. This real-time interaction adds a whole new dimension to learning that One-Way Conferencing cannot. By using interactive, collaborative teaching techniques students will be more involved with their instructors and classmates and can participate more easily. The technology can be intimidating to some students especially if they are at an off-site. Instructors can encourage communication and involvement in a number of ways. A great advantage to Two-Way and Multi-Way Conferencing is that both the instructors and students pick up on visual cues during their time together.
